As a result of a joint collaboration between ESB Telecoms Ltd, DCENR (Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources) and HEAnet, ESB Telecoms Ltd has granted HEAnet the right to use a fibre optic pair on the ESB Telecoms Ltd national fibre network.
Since 2005 HEAnet has used this ESB Telecoms Ltd fibre pair as the core backbone for the HEAnet national network. Utilising the ESB Telecoms Ltd fibre pair HEAnet has been able to provide Internet access nationally to Universities, Institutes of Technology, third-level research organisations and primary and post-primary schools across Ireland.
HEAnet and ESB Telecoms Ltd have collaborated on several joint projects to date:
- ESB Telecoms Ltd is an on official partner in the schools 100Mbit/s project;
- Promotion of sustainable energy matters within schools;
- Hosting of ESBT Green Energy content for schools http://green.scoilnet.ie
- Supporting ESB and TSSG as part of the Finesce (Future Internet Smart Utility Services ) project.
The ESB Telecoms Ltd NTFON (National Telecoms Fibre Optic Network) consists of over 1300Km of fibre and is shown below.
